My name is Brenda Lee Castels. I had cancer.
Drawing on my experience while growing up I always felt I had been living
a responsible life and had no fears regarding my future.
I have no credit card debt, absolutely none whatsoever. I own my
own vehicles and for the past eight years I have been on the path to owning
a home I could easily afford.
My business, a construction company, fell victim, like so many others, to
the Georgia drought. Then the downturn in the housing industry
finished it off. It actually began experiencing serious shortfalls before
November of 2007
By mid 2008 our construction company was not producing regular work or
projects. It was time to shut it down. We had seventeen independent
contractors depending on us. The hardest part was telling them they
could no longer depend on us to support their families.
To add insult to injury, January 20th inauguration day of this year I was
diagnosed with cancer.
I have spent the past 6 month being treated with chemo and radiation. I
had surgery on May 28th and can say I am now cancer free .
Before the cancer there was nothing on the horizon that would have
indicated additional problems. When my credit score was still in the 700’s
I applied for and received two unsecured loans to rescue my home from
foreclosure. I had not been diagnosed with cancer at that time so I viewed
these loans as my mini bailout so to speak. Spending my way out of debt
conflicted with my up-bringing but that was the tone resonating from
Washington so against my better judgment, I gave it a try. Bad choice on
my part. For the record, You Cannot Spend Your Way Out Of Debt!
What I found to be particularly discouraging is I had been unable to find any
programs to assist homeowners that could have otherwise weathered this
downturn were it not for medical concerns.
I was not brought up to whine or complain about rough rides but this just
did not make sense. There are so many people that have lived a
responsible life and when a life altering situation presents itself it is very
difficult for the “Newbie” to find assistance.
That just didn't set well with me. My world was turned completely upside
down and now I have to forage for assistance?
I learning how to ask for help I found quite a few organizations to turn to.
In writing blogs and other clever creative ventures I found others who
knew about groups and organizations that would help others.
I do not have any money to help you. What I do have is links and phone
numbers to places you really can turn too.
This is my way of giving back. Each time a family who has a gas or light
bill they can't pay gets help I am blessed. Each time a person knows there
is someone out there to help I am blessed. Knowing a child in our country
is not going to bed hungry I feel blessed.
